Bacardi Installs Solar Skylights for Temperature Control
In order to make its award-winning BACARDÍ rum, Bacardi relies upon a heavily controlled storage environment at its Puerto Rico production facility. The company monitors variables ranging from air temperature to sea breeze and has found a way to update the facility to meet its environmental goals while maintaining its commitment to quality. To this end, the company has made use of state-of-the-art ceiling insulation and solar skylights, which increase natural light and help with temperature control inside the warehouses where BACARDÍ rum ages in barrels made from white oak.
Bacardi has been tracking its environmental impact since 2006 and has set a goal of cutting its emissions of greenhouse gasses in half by 2017. It has already reached a 48 percent reduction in emissions from BACARDÍ rum production, and the skylights and insulation will help it continue to maximize sustainable resources available in Puerto Rico, like the island’s ubiquitous sunshine. Bacardi’s other environmental efforts include recycling water used to clean its barrels and using certified-sustainable cardboard boxes for its BACARDÍrum packaging.
