Bacardi Limited and WWF Partner to Aid Sugarcane Production in Fiji
The producer of the world’s leading variety of rum, Bacardi is directly involved in the sugarcane industry, utilizing molasses as one of its key ingredients. Recently, the firm partnered with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for an environmental initiative in Fiji focused on implementing more sustainable sugarcane production methods, preserving the environment, and supporting economic growth.
Bacardi and WWF collaborated on a model sugarcane farm project, providing examples of more sustainable, environmentally friendly farming methods as developed and implemented in other sugar-producing regions. The initiative focused on basic changes such as terracing and spacing sugarcane rows, which could prevent excess runoff into Fiji’s Great Sea Reef and connect waterways. As one of the most extensive reef systems in the world, the Great Sea Reef supplies approximately 80 percent of the domestic fish industry, greatly impacting Fiji’s economy. The island nation’s tropical farmlands have had a similar effect, as Fiji’s sugarcane industry serves as a cornerstone of its economic development. In seeking to preserve Fiji’s agricultural and environmental assets, Bacardi and WWF’s model farm program aim to preserve the country’s natural beauty and economic prosperity.
