Green Drink – Bacardi Proves its Commitment to Energy Efficiency

img_sustainable_2Many people enjoy Bacardi products because of the company’s commitment to producing quality alcoholic beverages; however, the company also excels in its approach to managing industrial environmental, health, and safety concerns.

Bacardi U.K. Ltd. recently received the Carbon Trust Standard because of its achievement in reducing carbon emissions by almost 13 percent. The Carbon Trust Standard recognizes businesses that have demonstrated measurable success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To determine eligibility, the Carbon Trust Standard assesses the organization’s efforts, results, and dedication to continued improvement. To remain Carbon Trust Standard certified, companies must reapply every two years and show that they have sustained their results.

Bacardi’€™s operations in the United Kingdom include Bacardi Martini Limited and all of the John Dewar & Sons Limited operations. For the past three years, Bacardi has diligently worked to evaluate and manage its impact on the environment worldwide, resulting in an 18 percent reduction in its global operations’ carbon emissions. In the U.K., Bacardi’s efforts translate to 4,400 fewer tons of CO2 each year, which is comparable to removing 1,128 motor vehicles from the roads.

To obtain these results, Bacardi designed a six-step energy savings program to allow facilities to calculate energy usage and share energy-saving approaches. In addition, it employed a more energy-efficient system to recycle heat during the distillation process, reducing its consumption of natural gas as well. At the Macduff Whisky Distillery in Scotland, Bacardi installed a high-efficiency boiler, and it added hybrid and electric cars to its Winchester vehicle fleet.

In 2009, Bacardi received the Triple Crown certification, which reflects that the company’s operations comply with the world’€™s most renowned standards for environmental, safety, and health regulations. These standards include ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001. The Triple Crown honor set Bacardi apart and distinguished it as the first major spirit company to achieve the honor. Besides complying with all pertinent regulations, Bacardi minimized the resources used in its packaging, promoted recycling of materials, and reduced waste at all levels of production. The organization also supported safe work practices and provided all employees and facilities with optimal security.

Bacardi belongs to several organizations that support sustainability in the workplace, such as the United Nations Global Compact, the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable, and the Better Sugarcane Initiative.
